Category: Windows Server 2008 R2
Hello people,
Windows Server ® 2008 R2 was built on Windows Server 2008 and it is a new version of operating system other than Windows Server 2003 R2 that was an upgrade. Moreover, the R2 is the first to be released only in 64-bit version.
Besides the focus on the simultaneous development of client and server, Microsoft focused on three main areas of technology investment for the construction of the Windows Server 2008 R2. They include: Virtualization and Consolidation, Management, and Dynamic Web.

The Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 is the new version of Windows Server operating system from Microsoft. Built on the features and capabilities of Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2 allows you to create solutions for the organization easier to plan, deploy and manage than previous versions of Windows Server.
Using the high level of security, reliability and performance provided by Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2 extends connectivity and control to local and remote resources. This means that organizations can benefit from reduced costs and increased efficiency achieved through better management and control of resources across the enterprise.

Improving Web Application Platform
Windows Server 2008 R2 includes many enhancements that make this release the best platform for Windows Server applications to date, although undoubtedly the most important factors contributing to this are the updates for Internet Information Services 7 (IIS 7). The new Web server includes features that make applications to run faster while using less system resources. The improved features also combine to help reduce the work of managing and providing support for applications based on Windows Server as well as to improve availability, reliability and scalability.
Major improvements to the Web servers and applications in IIS 7 R2 are:
| • | Less work to administer and provide support for applications based on the Web |
| • | Enhanced support for Web-based applications |
| • | Services enhanced file transfer. |
| • | Ability to extend the functionality and resources to applications based on Web |
Enabling Virtualization and Consolidation
Virtualization is an important factor in today's data centers. The operating efficiencies offered by virtualization allow organizations to substantially reduce operating activities and energy consumption.
Windows Server 2008 R2 provides the following virtualization improvements:
| • | Virtualization of computer s provided by Hyper-V virtualizes the system resources of a physical computer. Desktop virtualization enables the delivery of a virtualized environment for operating systems and applications. When alone, usually the Hyper-V is used for server computer virtualization. When combined with the technology VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure), Hyper-V is used for client computer virtualization. |
| • | Presentation virtualization Virtualizes a processing environment and separates graphics processing and input and output, making it possible to run an application in one location and have control over their application in another. Presentation virtualization could allow the execution of a single application, submit a workstation with multiple applications. |
Simplifying Management
The ongoing management of servers in the data center is a time-consuming tasks that IT professionals face today. Whatever management strategy deployed, it must provide support for managing both the physical and the virtual environment.
To help with this problem, Windows Server 2008 R2 has new features to reduce the ongoing management of Windows Server 2008 R2 and reduce administrative work to perform operational tasks simple day-to-day. Moreover, these administrative tasks can be executed on the server or remotely. Among the benefits are:
| • | Better management of energy consumption of data centers. |
| • | Enhanced remote administration. |
| • | Reduction of administrative work for administrative tasks performed interactively. |
| • | Enhanced command line and automated management by using PowerShell version 2.0. |
| • | Improved identity management provided by Domain Services Active Directory and the Active Directory Federation Services. |
| • | Improved compliance with established standards and best practices. |
Scalability and Reliability
Windows Server 2008 R2 supports a volume unprecedented workload with dynamic scalability and total reliability and availability. A large number of new and updated features contribute to that support, including:
| • | Optimization of complex CPU architectures |
| • | Greater operating system componentization |
| • | Improved performance and scalability for applications and services |
| • | Greater availability of automated services for IP configuration using DHCP Failover feature |
| • | Increased security for DNS service by using the DNSSEC |
Making the Experience Better Together
Windows Server 2008 R2 has many features designed to work specifically with computer clients running Windows 7 . This is the next version of Microsoft's client operating system.
The features that are only available on client computers running Windows 7 with server computers running Windows Server 2008 R2 include:
| • | Simplified remote connectivity for corporate computers by using the DirectAccess feature. |
| • | Secure remote connectivity for private and public computers, using a combination of features Remote Workspace, Presentation Virtualization, and Gateway Services Remote Desktop. |
| • | Improved performance of branch offices, using the BranchCache feature. |
| • | Greater security for remote offices by using the DFS Read Only. |
| • | Power management more efficient by using new Group Policy settings for power management for Windows 7 clients. |
| • | Better integration of virtualized presentation, using the new feed applications and workstations. |
| • | Increased fault tolerance for connectivity between sites, using the Agile VPN feature. |
| • | Increased protection for removable drives using the encryption feature BitLocker Drive Encryption to encrypt removable drives. |
| • | Best prevention against data loss in transit users, using the Offline Folders feature. |
| • | Greater availability of automated services for IP configuration using DHCP Failover feature. |
| • | Greater security for DNS services, by using the DNSSEC. |
